Thumbs up How To.. Change Brake Pads

Hi All,

I've not seen a recent how to thread on changing brake pads, so thought I'd do one..

Once the car is jacked up and the wheel removed, you will be able to see the Calipers & pads.

These are a set of brembos from a 33 GTR on my 33 GTS-t, so its very slightly different to the standard GTS-t brakes, but the priciples are exactly the same.

Only tools I used were a set of pliers a levering bar and some copper grease.

Pic when wheel is off below, I personally find it easier to turn the wheel to full lock as it makes it easier to get at the caliper.

Firstly remove the 2 pin clips which will then allow you to remove the retaining bolts. Careful when you pull these out as the spring clip is held in by these bolts and will literally launch itself at you if not done carefully.

Once out the first thing you will notice is that the new pads will not fit. The reason for this is as your last pads have worn, the pistons will need to push further to make contact with the disc.

This is where I used a levering bar to push the pistons back in. Please be careful when doing this as there are rubber seals around the pistons, if you tear these its bad news !

When you push the pistons back in, it is going to make the level rise in your
brake fluid resevoir, so all I did was to wrap come cloth around the top of the resevoir to catch any overflow.

Once the pistons had been pushed back, little bit of copper grease on the back of the new pads and in they slotted.

Slide one of the retaining bolts in, and push in the pin clip.

Put the spring clip in place an then slide the other retaining bolt back in. This may require you to push the clip towards the caliper to allow you to get the retaining bolt in.

Once in, put the pin clip back in place, tidy up, wheel back on and off you go to do the other side.

Level of difficulty, I'd say easy. Time taken to do, allow 60 - 90 mins as sometimes the retaining bolts can be a pain to remove.

Please note this is only a guide showing how I changed the pads, no responsibility taken if you end up with your brakes on back to front or upside down

What you may also find is that the pads do not fit in height, This is because the guides have rusted underneath and push up slightly, what i have done is slightly grind the top edge of new pads , but really Should take off guides and clean them up

Do you need to grease the disks to stop them from squealing? If the disks are hot should i use oven gloves?
