How Moff to fit an Oil Cooler..

Right chaps, I've not cocked up yet, but shortly I'm going to fit an oil cooler, so thought I would
be nice and write a how too as well, as we are on the theme of adding more Skyline related stuff to the forum

What I would like to know before I start is if there is anything to heed ?

Depending on how time is looking will decide if the Air Con comes out on the same day, so will
base my questions on the air con being in.

The following is quite straight forward :

Drain Oil (will be changed)
Remove oil Filter (will be changed)
Fit Sandwich plate (planning on doing it with oil cooler pipes already attached)
Fit new oil filter
Remove Bumper
Remove FMIC (might Spray it black whilst its off)

The not so easy bit

Feeding oil cooler pipes through slam panel (thinking of cutting away plastic shroud by bottom
of water rad on drivers side)

Fitting the cooler in front of the air con rad (The Apex Kit comes with a load of nuts and bolts
and 3 metal mecano type strips) Does anyone have any pics of theirs fitted or Advice ?

Some advice I will take given by Spearmint is to fit the oil cooler upside down to allow
for easier oil changes. I guess it will also put less stress on the oil pump ?

Any advice appreciated

Moff

When you fit the sandwich plate DONT over tighten the adapter or you will shear it off

Look at my thread in a bit Moff when I have posted some pics.

Andy has changed the oil cooler position for an even better one.

@ Rich. Yeah, and don't do it twice like I did!

Fit the adaptor to the filter and spanner that on hand tight + quarter turn. Then fit the oil filter/adaptor assembly hand tight. Make it so much more easier.

When I first fitted my oil cooler, I had the hose connections on the bottom and everyone said that I will get an air lock at the top of the cooler and the oil would only flow through the lower part of it

So.........I took it all of again and mounted it with the hose connections at the top.

Good point..

So options are

1. Mount Upside Down - Might Trap Air, reduce efficiency

2. Mount with connectors at the top - full core will be used, extra work on Oil pump ?

3. Mount on side with 'In' and the top - Slight use of Gravity full core will be used

4. Mount on side with 'Out' and the top - Oil pump will be pushing 'up hill' so more pressure on the pump.

Seems option 3 might be the best ?? Anyone know for sure ?

I would always assume 'IN' at the bottom and 'OUT' at the top would be best.

I think you worry too much, the oil will flow through the full core no matter how it is mounted. By the time the oil is hot enough to need the oil cooler it would have cleared any air lock in the system.

Exclamation

Remember to NEVER fit the oil cooler unions next to the inner wing flitch

Some jokers fitted an oil cooler to mine and it wore through and VERY NEARLY cost me my engine when all the oil went p*****g out!

Just double check ALL fittings are not rubbing, ect

Moff

"in" at the top wont draw the air in it out the bottom...

I fitted mine like this.

Pope: "Scott how much to bung in an oil cooler?"

Scott: "xxx"

Pope: "fine"

Its not time consuming or expensive and they change the oil and plugs etc (actually they changed the engine too but thats another how much to request...)
