The day has come at last! - Project Spearmint @ Abbey M/S 05/08/2008

Well the day is nearly here for myself and Project Spearmint.

Way back on Thursday 19th July 2007 my last engine went pop due to running far too much power for the stock con rod bolts. So I went all out on the rebuild process with Andy W @ SP Auto's, addressing everything possible with a view to making the RB25 unit very robust and reliable.

The car is now run in and on the 5th August 2008 it is booked in with Abbey M/S to be set-up properly. Everything performance wise is listed below so how about we have a little game and have a guess with just how much Project Spearmint will have at the hubs in both torque and HP and also at what boost.

My spec is almost identicle to yours except I will be using a HKS 3037 turbo and running a Exedy Hyper single clutch and flywheel and 600cc injectors so I am very interested to see what yours makes.

I reckon low 500's.......

A slight hiccup with this one.

It pulled 510ath on the dyno yesterday but Det was heard so he backed off. On the next run it only pulled 460ath so it was investigation time.

Through the use of a boroscope, no evidence of Det was found in any of the 6 cylinders or on the face of the pistons, valves seated correctly, no catch tank full of oil or the dipstick getting blown out, plugs where ok as well.

A hot compression test revealed all cylinders bar #5 @ approx 125PSI whilst #5 sat at around 80PSI.

So the mapping was abandoned with the threat of the engine being stripped down for invest once it was back at Andy's.

It was a strange one as the compression check highlighted a snag yet no other symptoms where present, it idled just right with no hunting whatsoever and it drove back superb albeit for a half mapped car.

Andy has just come off the phone to me with some good news though as he has just done a cold dry compression check. #5 was sat @ 115PSI whilst the rest was sat at 120PSI (ish). A wet check revealed all the cylinders @ 125PSI.

It appears that it may have just been a ring stuck and the drive back plus a proper cool down must have 'pinged' it back out and seated it correctly. All engines on the dyno do afterall get one hell of a thrashing.

So fingers crossed, Abbey will accept it back and finish the map off. Maybe it will be ready for Rotorstock maybe not. So it's just a waiting game for me at the moment.

Rest assured, Andy and Abbey are on the case.
