240K GT starting problem

At nearly 30 years old I think she is entitled to have the odd problem but this one is killing us. Started last summer at a car show where when we tried to leave the old girl flooded and we had to pull the plugs and dry her out. Finally managed to get home some what later than planned. We then set about trying to fix the problem. With a lot of help from the Datsun Owners Club we have tried everything including replacing the fuel pump (that was a mission!)

State of play now is that when you turn the key you have to wait for the fuel pump to prime the engine, but the fuel pump does not cut out so you have to guess when to fire the engine and its a very fine line between getting it right and flooding her .Once flooded its game over. We have been trying to find any one that is prepared to help but the moment we tell what car it is they all back off! So the old girl has been off the road for a year now and its a real waste. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Its fuel injected. I believe it to be one of the first fuel injected engines the Japs made.

Dad didn't have the engine dropped when the car had its paint job so the engine bay didn't get sprayed.

So its looks like it was the same colour my friend had hers was a V reg

Well it shouldnt flood with injection and the pump should cut out when the pressure is reached , sounds like a leak in the pressurised side of the system , have the injectors been checked at all ??

To be honest I would get yourself registered on some Z car forums, UK and USA, they are bound to have a wealth of information as the engines share quite a lot in comon with the Zeds

It sounds like your fuel pressure is to high, the new pump is sending to much fuel and the regulator can't deal with it. What pump have you fitted? and what is the standard pump rated at? I take it it's not common rail multi point. What about fitting an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and a new fuel return pipe?

With the help of the Datsun Owners Club we sourced a fuel pump for a 240Z as we were advised by a very knowledgeable Datsun fanatic that this was basically the same pump.

Common rail multi point? Do you mean the metal pipes that run into the injectors? Forgive my ignorance, but I am a woman!

I'm no expert but it sounds to me like the fuel pump isn't cutting off because it doesn't know that the system is primed and the fuel pressure has been reached, I'd be looking at the pressure regulator or a relay. What controls the fuel pump and tells it to stop priming?

Welcome to SOC by the way.

Another easy thing to check is the engine oil , does it smell of fuel??

I'm not convinced its the pump i think the pump keeps running because there is a leak , fitting an inline fuel pressure gauge would show if the problem is pump related but i would be checking the injectors if it were me , a leaky one could easily cause the flooding yet be barely noticable when the car is running

If the fuel pressure was really high the injectors will struggle to work properly so the car would drive and run very badly all the time especially on idle when warm

my guess would be injectors or seals

clamp off the fuel return line if the pump keeps running the fuel has to be going somewhere

If it is leaking injectors, it will thin down your engine oil and you run the risk of damaging the bottom end of the engine. Pull out your dip stick and have a sniff, if it smells of petrol you are on borrowed time
