    My new toy !!

well since selling the Skyline 4 weeks ago i've done a lot of thinking about what to get next, i was in Fuerteventura for 3 weeks and lay on the beach watching the lovelies go by and also did a lot of thinking about what to do next.

Originally i wanted a bike but the weather at home had definately put me off that idea and my missus and my daughter gave me loads of grief over it, so that idea was scrapped - for good !!

So i got to thinking about the reasons why i decided to sell up, the main reason was the cars lack of use, this was entirely due to the fact i couldn't drive it anywhere with speed humps or uneven roads because of the low front bumper, also i wouldn't take it out in the rain due to the shiny engine bay.

So i decided to get a car that i could drive fast, drive anywhere and still could go to the shows in and use all year round..... so i got this....

Got myself an EVO 5, prices are good at the moment, Sold the Skyline for good money and now have a couple of grand in my back pocket, i want another project as i went as far as i wanted with the Skyline......

Its running 370bhp with 350lbs torque and even though the skyline had more power i reckon this is faster, the power comes in really early and it pulls fantastic, and of course it handles great.

    here's a short spec list :

    Engine

    Fujitsubo Giken SS backbox
    Janspeed De-cat Pipe
    Apexi downpipe
    Ralliart coil leads
    HKS Airfilter
    Apexi Ecu + Hand Commander
    Exceedy Organic clutch
    Ignition earthing system
    Running 1.6 bar boost
    SS Manifold Heat Sheild
    Walbro Fuel Pump
    Cooler Grade Denso plugs

    Suspension/wheels

    17 inch Advan Alloys
    Annodised Wheel Nuts
    Bridgestone Forenza Tyres
    Front Wing Inner Braces
    Tein Super Street Coilovers
    Front and Rear Strut Braces
    Grooved front discs

    and more..

this spec list will dramatically increase over the winter months when i start spending money on it........ Click here to enlarge

This car won't be a "fair weather" car like the skyline was, i'm going to drive this car like its supposed to be driven - HARD !!

I am amazed at how well in handles especially in the wet, its quick, very quick, the turbo spools up from nowhere, in any gear it pulls like a train - the brembo brakes are brilliant.

its got 4 doors and a really nice interior and a bigger boot than my skyline had, i never thought i'd ever get one of these but to be honest i'm glad i did - and i've got lots of money left over from the sale of the skyline to spend on mods.

    cheers

    Andy.

Very nice mate, I like the Evo`s and nearky bought a FQ340 in a moment of madness but bought a Subaru instead. GTRKID on this forum said he had an Evo before the Skyline but couldn`t get one with the suspension being to hard. Hope you enjoy this one mate. Got to admit 4 doors is starting to appeal a bit more to me also.

Looking very nice Andy. Click here to enlarge
To be honest, if I'd have been able to get an earlier Evo over here I would have taken it over the WRX wagon.....really do prefer the aggressive looks of the 5/6 over the 7/8/9.

Hope to see some interesting additions over the coming months Click here to enlarge
I used to be someone around here!
Now I'm quite happy being no-one somewhere else.

Normal services will resume....sometime in 2010

I have been fettling already i have to admit, i've moved the Apexi hand controller to a more suitable place and mounted the apexi turbo timer where the ashtray was.

i've ordered a carbon exhaust heat shield and a carbon bonnet vent, and a full set of samco hoses.

I spent 7 hours today in the garage whilst it was wet outside and gave the car a FULL body polish, used meguires paint cleaner, tech wax and 2 coats of canuba wax, the paintwork looked white but it was actually a bit grey compared to what its like now, looks shiny now.

Going to give the interior a good clean tomorrow and then the engine bay on saturday - then back to work on Sunday Click here to enlarge

I agree Mark with you, i had around £10.5k to spend and i looked at an Evo 7 and it didn't do much for me, looked far too tame and the interior i think isn't as nice as the Evo 5, so i spent much less on the Evo 5 and i think its money well spent, now i've got a few grand in my back pocket. I liked the agressive look on the 5 and its very practical too.

Still not sure what to make of Evo`s. I was offered a 4 as a straight swap when i was selling the skyline, i turned it down as i didnt think it was the car for me, dispite being worth a lot more, and i was rather scared by the service intervals and costs.

How do you find it for daily driving, haven`t they got quite short gearing making it quite thrashy on motorways?

Either way, it`s a nice tidy looking car, and the torque they give i find quite impressive, from what i`ve seen they seem to stay fairly square when upping the power.

I do rather like the Evo 9 estate, did anyone see the one at JAE on the MLR stand across from us, since found 3 for sale at the same garage from 16 to 18k, quite a lot of car for the money me thinks.

I don't like the 4's much, the 5's are much better and with a MUCH better engine, i have 370hp in mine with not a lot of work done to achieve that.

Its true the service intervals are a bit short but there are lots of specialists out there who do this at a good price just as is the case with skylines.

The daily drive is great, very nippy in traffic and very quick. I drove it 150 miles back home when i picked it up and it was just fine on the motorway, 70mph gave 3200rpm but it didn't seem thrashy, even in 5th you can put your foot down and it will overtake very fast.

I'm not a advocate of top speeds, i rarely do over 90mph on the motorway anyway, i'm not interested in "go to jail" speeds, its accelaration and handling i want and the Evo gives me this in bucket loads, it pulls in every gear with little lag, i went out for a play today when the sun was out and i didn't want to come home, i haven't felt like that for ages.

Don't get me wrong i loved my Skyline but i'm enjoying this more Click here to enlarge mainly because i can actually drive this one without worrying about getting it wet or that there is a speed hump anywhere.

I never thought i'd ever get a 4 door rally car but my ideals have changed over the last 12 months, lets see what the next 12 months hold.

    cheers

    Andy.

To be honest I was dead set on getting an Evo 5 or 6. I went to look at one but then saw my GTR. Really aggressive looking cars and when ever I see them on the track they look really quick. I m not a fan of the EVO's 7,8 or 9 although I was surprised how cheap they were.

Hi Rich, i don't want to go too far otherwise it will become just like the skyline was - in the garage out of the rain !!

I will make it special though, just because its a hobby, i'm going for carbon rather than all out bling, but for this year i'm going to drive it, i took it out today in the pouring rain and it still handles just as good as in the dry !!

    i'll keep you posted.

The modding has begun on my Evo 5...

Its now time to spend all my money on modding my Evo 5.

So a couple of things have been done since I had it 3 weeks ago.

I replaced the drivers and passenger door cards as they were knackered - thanks to Saj at Jap Performance parts....

Jap Performance Parts : Breaking Cars

The Brembo's had gone pink so I treated them to a coat of T-cut which made them red again, I am going to refurb them next week, remove all the old laquer, repaint, put some new stickers on and then re-laquer.

    BEFORE :

    A TEMPORARY AFTER :

( I painted the disc lip too in black, thats why there's black paint on the disc, one touch of the brake and the black paint has gone from the disc. )

The door pillar trim started to go a bit grey, so i bought some carbon fibre sheet and made some pillar covers.

    thanks to Stewart at Stewartsf1.com

Fitted a carbon bonnet - THANKS DIGGA. Click here to enlarge Click here to enlarge ...: - this will fit in with my plans for a carbon rear spoiler blade, carbon exhaust heat shield and carbon mirrors, also a carbon vortex generator..... Click here to enlarge

The list will be a long and expensive one :

Wheels , I'M AFTER A SET OF 18"s IN WHITE IF ANYONE KNOWS SOMEONE WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN A DEAL WITH MY ADVANS.

    Carbon mirrors
    Carbon rear spoiler blade
    Carbon mirrors
    carbon vortex generator

Complete blue silicon hose and polished hard pipe kit for engine

(there is a local guy to me who has all the equipment to make hard pipes and he can put the lip on the end too to stop the hose coming off, he is going to have my car for a day to measure everything up - VERY GOOD PRICE TOO - i'll put up his details once he's done the job and i'm happy with it )

    Power coat rocker cover blue
chroming and polishing in engine bay
    carbon bonnet lifters

get engine forged and up the power to 400+
(inc cams, boost controller, clutch, injectors etc)

So this will be a project thread which i'll update as i go along, i'll include write ups for mods i've done myself with photos, and i'll include where i got any parts from and who helped me with the work.

    cheers

    Andy.
