Smile Today I took apart a gearbox...

Well, seeing as I have some time on my hands at the mo, finally got round to taking apart my old gearbox that was nice and crunchy..

So.. It start off like this..

I took off the bolts that housed where the gear stick goes

To reveal this

I wanted to have a closer look at the gate selector thingy which guides the gear stick, couldn't figure out quite how to get to it, so...

...out came the Angle Grinder

Then you can see

There was hardly any wear on this gate. The main wear seemed to be first gear, although this part seems to be very high quality (pics below of it cleaned up with other parts)

Now to split the box

Undo some bolts, take off the release bearing

Then you can see a little of the mechanism

Remove the gudgeon clip thingy on the top and middle spline as below

Then get a big hammer and chisel type thing and beat it

Off with the case

Some well made bits and pieces from the box

Some of the cogs had nice chunks out them, it had been rather abused this box...

Technical terms are purely made up in my head and may not relate to any real technical terms on this planet..

There we go, thats what I did today... Tomorrow I will mainly be taking it more apart

Dont forget Moff , when you want to remove the thingy , it wont come apart without a good wack from a lump hammer be carefull not to damage the wotsit , but if you do it can be bent back into shape by putting between two bits of wood, preferably 4 x 2 and jumping up and down on it.

Some great advise there Gordon, Moff I suggest you print this off and keep it by your side, never know when the doofer might go ping, you'll need this.

Dude, most of the gears are worn, with some chunks out of them. Plus I wont be the most gentle person removing this

Tis rather good fun, plus lots more pics to come...

Although, doing a favour for my brother tomorrow now so may not be able to continue with this until next week...

Well done Moff, nice to see the workings in there, even though a bit of a brutal way of dismantling it.
