what does this bit do?

hi....bit concerned with this one.....i nipped out for a bite to eat from work and on the way back i could hear this strange clicking noise from around were the arial is.......and my speedo needle kept moving erratically whilst maintining the same speed....

had a look in the boot and on the left hand side mounted just above the jack holder......and there is this little siver box about the length of a pack of rizzla reds, about the same width but about 20mm deep.....it has a single connector to it that comes from a thin loom with only 1 other connector (maybe for arial...im not sure) and were it clips to this loom it has two grey/dirty white insulated wires that run into the unit itself...
anyone know what it does.....ive removed it as it was getting very very hot but i havent had time to try and see what it does.........i would say speedo but then ive had the central locking make the speedo needle jump momentarily so who knows......i would love to think its something i dont need as its near the arial but i bet its important...

can`t be anything to do with your speedo if it`s in the boot. If it`s getting hot, it must be a motor that`s done in.

thats the odd thing it doesnt look like a motor at all.....it just looks like a small aluminium tin with 1 pair of wires going into it....its potted on the back with some rubber type stuff to seal it and it looks self contained.....dunno what an earth it can do...
it doesnt have any wires or connetions out of it either....
