reading low oil pressure

hi just wondering if can one can help me? iv just re-built me skyline r33 gts as i melted a couple of pistons. i bought a second hand bottom end and changed everything over. the car fired up first time, but the stanard oil gauge hasnt gone above 1/4 mark which is 2, if u rev it or take it for drive it rises very slightly but wont go above 2!just sitting right at bottom.the car dives fine and sound perfect any ideas what this could be or is sumthing major wrong?

I would suspect a faulty sender unit.

I agree aswell but i wouldn't chance it. Can you swap the senders over or fit a different (aftermarket) gauge to it just to check? Does it have an oilcooler fitted?

What bearings did you use in the bottom end?

Also is your oil pump providing enough pressure?

I wouldn't drive it.
The oil pumps can wear and fail, the relief valves can also stick due to contaminants - sometimes from the worn pump or a rebuild that has not been kept clean.

Like has been said, substitute the sender or get the oil pressure checked with a pressure test kit. If it has been running low it will be worth popping the bearing caps off for a look, as they will be the first to suffer

All you need is a cheap halfords gauge just to check it. I may be wrong but i think the oil pressure sender for the standard gauge is separate to the oil pressure switch for the warning light. This means that if the light goes out when you start the engine then it is probably the sender, they are crap.

That sounds like a bad connection to me. I'd keep an eye on it still though.
