ABS fault

My ABS has stopped working and the lights come on the dash. I was wondering where I should begin the probably lengthy, tedious diagnosis of this problem. Any ideas?

Does the R33 have a self-diagnostic mode? (I would think it has. The R34 has a mode specifically for brakes).

First stop if not would be cleaning up around the sensors which are on the back of the hubs. First off, with an airline, then, if no change, maybe try a brake cleaner, cleaned/dried off with an airline. I still no luck, then it's probably one of the sensors, which after 10+ years are probably fed up with working overtime with your new uprated brakes James

I don't know if it has abs self diagnosis. I'll give the underside a steam clean next weekend (full heat/pressure of course) and wash out 18 months worth of mud and clag and see what happens. It would'nt hurt to wash the whole car really, this year, .............but I can't be arsed.
I would'nt be surprised if its not them effing mice again.

Oh how I could go on about the tough life of those of us in the farming community but you've heard it all before so I won't

Mainly because that is not my main reason. That, will still have to wait

I have been watching, and posting occasionally though.

Mind you, I haven't spoken to James lately

Oh it's alright... we have been in contact. I'm very aware she has been looking for a new job... I was going to offer to give her one, but

Actually, as far as i know, she has now been offered a job, but it's rubbish, so she may not take it

Done that. Nothing to clean really, the sensors locate inside the hubs on the front and were as clean as a whistle. As for the rear, I could'nt find any.
I can't see anything obviously wrong anywhere, the wireing seems ok. Brake fluid was changed a few months back.
On start up it illuminates as usual and goes out with the other check lights. It only comes back on once the car moves.

If the light comes on once the car is moving, it is almost certainly a wheel sensor playing up. The rear sensor may possibly on the rear diff......can't remember without looking.

the rear sensor is in the front of the diff on the 33 and there is only 1, unless it has the 'active' diff then there are 2 which are either side, on the stub axle

Get a multimeter. Follow the wires from the sensors to where they plug into the loom. Unplug them (with the ignition off so you don't log codes) check the sensor to see if it has gone open circuit, then check it for an output of about 0.5v as you turn the wheel at about 60rpm (one turn per sec)

I've been out freezing my wotsits off today and checked the wheel sensors. All 3 gave the same votage readings at similar rpm. All seems ok there.
The warning light comes on with the ignition and stays illuminated now, without moving the car.

I was coming over to see you this afternoon, but glad i didn't if you were outside fiddling with the car

If you bring it over here, we'll get in the workshop with my InfraSun and hopefully soon get it sorted... I'll have a quick swot up on ABS circuitry first though

I know somebody else with an Infrasun sauna. Nice on a cold day like today, but how the hell is it going to fix my ABS ?
