    Pro street drag series 2009

With the first Pro Street Drag series title awarded to season racer Richard Batty driving his self built and NR Autosport tuned 11 second Mitsubishi FTO sports racer, attention is now turning to this years title race in the 5 round drag race held at Warwickshire’s Shakespeare County Raceway.

In a move to make the series even more accessable for the average Japanese and European car enthusiast to enter, during the winter months the timing brackets have been altered in the street classes to:

    9.30 to 10.99 secs
    11.00 to 11.99 secs
    12.00 to 12.99 secs
    13.00 to 13.99 secs
    14.00 upwards

The Professional classes continue to cater for Pro 4wd/RWD (currently chasing 7 sec runs) and Pro FWD.

The series will take place during five of the Stratford-upon-Avon’s quarter mile Public Track Day weekends on Sundays, with practice being conducted on Saturdays on the following dates:

    April 18th/19th
    May 16th/17th
    June 13th/14th
    September 5th/6th
    October 17th/18th

The main objective of the series is to run affordable timed bracket classes for Japanese and European manufactured road legal vehicles with current MOT, full working dashboard and lights but on radial tyres. Wrinkle wall DOT tyres and full racing slicks can be used but only in the Pro classes. Any vehicle running quicker than 9.3 will automatically move into the Pro class and must be fitted with an approved roll cage.

Since the release of the series official forum www.prostreetdragseries.co.uk the series has already gained attention from drivers all over the country as well as receiving sponsorship interest from such notable companies as AET Turbos, Motorshack & VP Racing Fuels and Japanese Performance Magazine.

To compete all you need to do is register for free on the Pro Street Drag Racing forum www.prostreetdragseries.co.uk and then post up in the "Enter Here" Section to be assigned a race number. Existing race numbers are carried over from 2008 to 2009 (so competitors from 2008 do not need to re-register)

We look forward to seeing you there.

    Hi Cliff,

Is there a reason why the street class starts at 9.3 seconds?? Why isn't the fastest bracket simply 'under 10.99'. Not that my car is quicker than 9.3 secs, I just cannot see why there should be a cut off??

    Regards..............Jeff

Reading Cliff's post it sounds like the cut off is there because if your car is faster than 9.3 you HAVE to compete in pro. Most likely due to the extra safety requirements needed for a car that fast.

The time should not be the issue. If the car is road legal and has the neccessary safety equipment it is not a pro car. For example if a pro car runs slower than 9.3 it does not automatically become a Street Car now does it? So why should a Street Car automatically become a Pro Car??

My car weighs 1800kgs and is never likely to run a 9.3 or less, but if it did it would not be fair to put it in a class of non road legal cars weighing 1200kg, would it??

Sorry to go missing after posting this up!!

Ludders, in answer to your question, I understand exactly where you're coming from but the "committee" decided that was the way to go with the brackets and that cars running faster than a 9.3 are pretty much Pro cars

I did also fight the case that the bracket of 9.3 to 11 seconds is way too big a gap and would cost thousands for a car running 10.999 to achieve a 1st place in that group with Gary from GT-Art already running 9.6/9.7s each round!! I got out-voted and these rules stand for the 2009 season

It's good to see a few of you have entered now, all race numbers have been allocated to those who have registered so far and anyone is welcome to still jump onto the PSDS and into the world of competitive fun for all the family

I will also just say that these rules, although some are tough and need to be followed unless you want to run in the Pro class, are far less strict than the HKS drag series where you need an MSA competition license now, roll cage, driveshaft loops and flywheel shield for cars running quicker than 11.99, plus full approved race suit gloves and boots etc etc

I don't have a problem following safety rules as they are there to protect the driver, but.......... I still disagree with forcing a street legal car into the pro class. Why 9.3?? Why not 9.5 or 9.0 it just seems to be a figure plucked out of the air for no logical reason.

By the way there is no lower limit for street legal cars in the HKS Series as they have seen the light and realise that it does not make sense. To have a 9.3 barrier is to stop natural progress. Are the committee worried that the street cars might run faster than the pro cars and embarrass the pro car owners and tuners?:eusa_naughty:

A car is either street legal or not street legal, the time it runs does not change the facts.

    Jeff

I do agree and as it happens there will be quicker street cars than some Pro cars this year as various people have been forced into that category due to running non-standard exhaust exits and/or a non-standard dash

Funnily enough I'm just looking forward to getting myself on the drag strip again and not really focused on the series so much, mainly because I just started a new job which requires me to work shifts and that includes weekends, which in turn will dictate how many events I can make, hence I've given up the defence of my title 3 months before we even kick off

But, maybe the gods will be kind and I can make a few rounds for some fun and maybe even the great one will let me see an 11 for the first time ever!!
