    Poker dilemma!!!

    Hi All

As some of you know I like to play a bit of poker and am a reasonable player. I was playing the other night whilst here in the UK and the following happened, for those that play Texas Hold-em what would you have done as it has been bugging me.

    I am on the button

2 people flat call the big blind (100) and I raise to 350 when it gets to me pre-flop

    Small blind folds

    Big blind folds

    Player 5 calls me

    Player 6 folds

    I have AA

    Flop comes K K 8

    Player 5 checks

    I bet 500

Player 5 then pushes all in and I fold fearing the Kings but thinking he could of got lucky a couple of ways.

The guy dosent show but looks shocked when I show him my AA lay down, he was a newbie so he could of had anything in my book. We were evenly stacked on chips so if I had called one of us would of gone.

What would you of done with pocket AA?

Usually it woul depend on how much his All In was compared to your stack? But you say you were about even, so then how much was it compared to the existing pot?

If it was a huge increase over existing bets, then I would have suspected a bluff, but with a newbie you just never know.

I would have been concerned about his potential 3 of a kind though, and may have folded... that's why it's gambling though!!!

I have won / lost many a hand on the river card turning nothing into a winning hand.

Was this online? For real money? Or just play stuff?

Sometimes AA is not the best hand and you have to fold them, even with a flop like that, you did the right thing,he could of had a king or a pair of 8's,it hurts when you fold AA,but when your tourny is on the line you have to work out the risks,I would of done the same.

With bets like that, highly possible he had a King, although if he was calling you before the flop, he could have had 2 kings, queens or jacks already.

Or, if you are raising 500 on the flop and he had 2 kings in his hand, he knew you couldn't win and no flush was possible ?

How long had you been playing for in terms of time ?

This was a live game (1 table sit'n'go tourney) and the guy was a relative newbie. Had been playing for about 20mins so he hadnt made many calls and appeared a little unsure in the earlier hands.

Deep down i think I did the right thing tossing away my pocket AA's but as all poker players will know thats a hard lay down.

If it had been on line Id have stacked for sure . More people lose big money with AA than win big money. (especially on ladbrokes )

Its so easy to think your unstoppable with AA and there are so many ways you can be way behind after a meaningless (to you ) flop

To be ahead he has to either have a K or possibly, and more likely ? 88 . If so your chances of improvement are not good at all.

88 would certainly explain his calling your raise and then re raising all in .

Of course he couild of had the other 2 aces That would explain a shocked look for sure

As to would I call ? depends entirely on what he'd done previously and as said before how much was in the middle. Early in the game though - reluctantly fold but show him the cards NO WAY cos even if your right he aint going to show 88 or a king and make you look good.

I have never had luck with AA and with KK on the table and an all in, I would think he hit kings and was waiting to see what you did, I would have done exactly what you did (but I dont win very often so never take my poker advise).

More to the point... how did the game go after this?

You showing that you folded on pocket aces would have increased your bluffing power massively, and would make everyone at the table play tight for a while.

Ended up coming second after being confronted with a final all in of AK against my pocket 55, he hit an A on the flop, was ahead on chips and it was all over. Heads up my pocket pair was massive but he had more outs and hit the odds.

I like to think about hands I lost on when they damage my chip stack and think about what I did wrong, with the AA I am happy mucking them was the right answer at the time but it was a painful lay down.

    Thanks all for your input
