I've got Infinity Kappa speakers front and rear in mine. They aren't the bassy'est mid range speakers but the sound quality is excellent.

What about Bose speakers Al? Best sound quality without having to go for bigger speakers IMO, should do the job more than enough, but not sure if you can use them without using some sort of amp. Just a bit too pricy though

thinking about 6 x 9's in the back for a bit of bass, anyone know how much cutting is needed?

Most people use covered 6x9 spacer rings for the rear shelf , then use copious amounts of velcro to keep them in place. Not the ideal solution but it works. My car came like that , but i really like my music.
I managed to get a small powered sub that fits in the space above where the full pump is located. Nice neat solution. Click here to enlarge

You wont get decent bass without a sub

I fitted a wide range of speakers trying to get around this in my car but i ended up with rainbow components in the front doors and a pair of JBL 6 " woofers in the rear shelf i had a sub but it simply unplugged so you could take it out for trackdays /meets etc

dynamatting the front doors is a must as well makes a huge difference

    these rainbow speakers sound great

    Hi Al,
found abit of a write up on them:-

The CS2165 loudspeaker is an audio equipment that has a strong conception as well as 120 W power. The PlusOne woofer technology optimises the audio message quality by deleting the interference. Its rubber suspension and metallic body give the CS2165 speakers awesome stability especially at higher volume. The CS2165 loudspeaker combines remarkable audio power and quality that makes listening to music even more pleasurable.

    165mm
    40w RM
    120w Peak.

I'll sort a price out if they are any good to you.

    Julio.

Ive had JBL before and was impressed Al. I have heard a few people rave about alpine doors and 6 x 9 in back and they are not to expensive but of you can get a hole set of Julio go for it.

Once you stick to good to high quality well known brands it's hard to go wrong. The other suggestion is to get a car hi-fi shop to build you a replacement rear-shelf. If done properly should fit and look like the original one ( vents included). Have them use 6x9's at the rear and decent two way or three way coaxial speaker in the front. As mentioned above dynamat the front doors will help. Would also suggest a small but decent amp to make the most of your speakers. Head units tend to distort speakers as they usally don't have any filters. Brands like kenwood , Pioneer , sony , fusion , jbl and Alpine are good middle quaility products. Sometimes halfords do good end of ranges at very cheap prices, it worth a look. My previous set were a pair of three way 17cm pioneers for the front and two-way peioneer 6x9's in the rear shelf. Sounded o.k to me for light listening. Click here to enlarge
