1 officer was convinced i was committing an offence and gave me a ticket, 1 letter later the ticket was quashed
Its think you will find the relevant prosecution is from the Raod Traffic act not Vosa , like you say there is no mention of distance but that doesnt mean you cant be done a guy on pistonheads was done after driving from the west country to liverpool after buying a car on ebay , had all the paperwork but when the officer heard how far he had driven he was ticketed.

    what the police say

Q600: Can I drive my car without an MOT?

No, a car must be insured, taxed and have an MOT to be driven on the road. The penalty for driving a car without an MOT is a fine.

The most relevant exception to this is if you are driving your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged appointment for an MOT and you must take a direct route to the garage (but the vehicle must be insured). Although you must be aware that most failures of MOTs are offences in their own right so you may be committing other offences, for example defective tyres, brakes, lights, steering, horns etc.

However if you are stopped by the police on the way to or from the garage the onus is on you to prove that you had a pre-arranged appointment. Where possible it is always advisable to book your car in for an MOT in good time.

There are one or two other very minor exceptions in addition to the above but they do not really apply to the ordinary car driver.

As i pointed out, the police do not know the law, that first statement proves just that ! a car does not need an MOT or tax if it is being driven to a pre aranged MOT or a place where work to get an MOT is being done, you may well get a ticket if stopped, just like i did. on prodution of proof by letter it will not go any further

    'direct route to the garage'

does not say or mean you have to use one within a certian distance from the start of your journey

Even with a noisy, stickered up car isn't a guaranteed pull. Like others said its mostly the way its driven. I've only had mine 3/4 months now but I've been followed closely by police on a few occasions, but once they've done an insurance, mot and tax check, there's no reason for them to pull me unless I'm driving like a tw*t, been reported for driving like a tw*t (Happend in the past), or they think I'm not the owner of the car.. in which case only doin thier job. There are times they pull you for no reason, and are completely unresonable (I won't go into detail but - accused of speeding when I really wasn't - told my numberplate light was illegal but I only put it on there for the MOT 2 days earlier, so it was illegal WITHOUT it.. - and told off because I had no reverse light.. well wake up bacon, a reverse light isn't a legal requirement)

Sometimes they will try it on. Best thing is to know the laws (As Andy W clearly does) and stand up for your rights. Sometimes they will give you a ticket, seven day wonder, deficiency ticket, but if you're in the right then you can get it sorted... I got a seven day wonder and a deficiency ticket for having a headlight bulb out! I had a spare in the car but they wouldn't let me fit it and insisted to give me a ticket...
