I ask a local or look in local paper first as I live in a rural area & I feel it's important to support local buisnesses (if their reputation/work is good)
Other than that it's good 'ol google

    Told you google wins everytime

I use it to find out opening hours of shops, banks, telephone numbers, etc. Not only is everything to hand, but it's probably 300% quicker than getting the yellow pages out and going through the pages looking for a service. Even old people like Gordon use the internet

to a certian point yes you are right, but if someone has lived in the same house for 10 years and owned a car they will know most local garages to work on it, if you didn't take yours to your Dads place i bet you can think of at least 2 other test stations that are in the local area without using Google, however you may use Google to look up their number, but even with the cost i still use directories like 118 as the text is sent to my phone, i don't always have a pen to write something down when driving about

I personally use Google for all my searching.

However at work we use Thomson Local for advertising. Had about two cleints from it the the past couple of years. Have not re-newed this year.

We are seriously considering Google for future advertising, and re-vamping our website to bring it more up-to-date and user friendly even though it will not be an e-Commerce style site.

I did try Bing for awhile, and even have a search bar on my Internet Explorer. I still find myself looking through Goggle instead now though.

I still believe all you need in life is Google and Ebay, between the two you can buy or find out anything.

I know what you are saying but, I would search MOT and the town to find the local ones. and it's free also to use google, and with mobiles having access to the internet, i'd quickly google things if I was on the move etc. There must be business in 118 though as there are loads of annoying adverts on TV for them.. but are they advertising cause they need customers too? (can see this going in circles now )

Only if not near a computer and desperate for the info... but as Squeak says, loads of people will use Google on their mobile now as well.
