    Question Searching

When you want a plumber, electrician, fence putting up, or an MOT, where would you search for a phone number, wether you knew of the company, or not?

I spend a huge amount with a well known advertising media and seriously thinking of stopping it and spending the money elsewhere.

    google.

try separating the search instead of putting all the numbers together and try +44 etc.

If it HAD to be a web based search it would be Google.

    Otherwise....word of mouth.

A very pretty lady in a short skirt tried to get me to spend £3 -£4K on yellow pages adverts last year.
She showed me several competitor's full page adverts, stating 'why would they be doing it if it didn't work'.
Judy rang several of them and politely asked if they had increased business due to the adverts.
All of them said no and it was a total waste of money.

I know it's a different market to you Geoff but it pays to do some research

    I usually use Yell.com.

The Yellow Pages book is downsizing in some areas due to a lack of advertisers. It is not only much thinner than it was a few years ago, but it is going to be smaller in size by about 1/3

I have dedicated unique phone numbers in both the book and yell.com and the figures aren't good at all

Personally I google everything and I even use it as a spell checker

we stopped advertising for MOT in a certian publication, the cost of it was a too high. We now just run a small box Ad in Friday-Ad every other week, works out to less than £20 per week

If I was looking for the number only for a company I knew the name of, then it would be Yell.com, but if I didnt know the company I would google.

I always google. I don't bother using any other means nowadays. If I want to know anything or find anything or anyone I google it.

We still spend money on yellow pages but less and less each year. We are beginning to get more and more business via our web site and have invested more money and time in this. I'm sure more people are using the web. Definitely the way forward.

When we have an enquiry we always ask how they found us. That way we can keep an eye on what kind of advertising is working.

A lot of work comes via word of mouth. You can't beat personal recomendation in my opinion.
