Need an R33 GTS-T for > £3500, afew quick questions...

    Hi all,

Sold my Supra today for a very decent price indeed, looking to buy a daily driver that can also provide afew thrills for about the £3500 mark, and I cant think of much better than an R33.
Firstly, what would be the most expensive issue I could potentially face with an R33? My Supra was a 6-speed Getrag manual, which is a £3k bill if the gearbox goes. This was one of the main reasons I sold it.
Secondly, I have been offered an automatic already, but are they significantly inferior to the manuals? I wouldnt mind wafting along in an auto, but if its a slushy, sluggish box then its a no-go.
Finally, I avereged about 25mpg in the Supra, and it seems the R33 is roughly similar. Is the GTS-T a realistic proposition as an everyday car in terms of reliability?
Id ideally like to buy a car thats known on here if at all possible. The usual apologies for the noobish questions, Im looking for knowledgable opinions and not just yes or no 'use the search button' answers.

    Cheers guys!

I used my manual R33 GTs-t as a daily driver for 2 years. If you are lucky you'll get the same kind of mileage as your supra. I wouldn't have a problem buying an auto, they are very nippy!

i quite like the auto TBH, i'd recommend trying one, they often get dimissed because they are an 'auto' but i think everyone should try one of them before they can comment

but with it you do get slightly less MPG than you do with a manual, becky has used hers as a daily drive for the last 18 months

i love my auto mate for three reasons:

    1. You don't have to ever worry about grinding the gears through lazy shifting
    2. I no longer get foot cramp from a stiff clutch pedal
    3. My left hand is now totally free to drink a coffee, switch over the stereo or do anything I want with it without comprimising my driving also you can switch hands and give gestures to people who cut you up again without compromising your driving should you choose not that I'd recommend you to ever do some of these things :-)

However beware if the auto box goes it apparently costs a fortune to fix but I've not had a problem with mine since owning it.

IF the auto box goes on an R33 just stick a 2nd hand one in, there should be a fair few about as people insist on doing manual conversions to them

Thanks for the advice so far guys. Im thinking that Im going to go for a manual unless an auto comes along at a price thats too good to refuse. Im not expecting to get much more than 25mpg, much like my Supra you dont buy a car like this if your concerned about economy.
In terms of repairs, what would be the ballpark figures for jobs such as:

-Second hand gearbox/ diff + fitting
    -New turbo
    -Second hand RB25DET/ engine rebuild

As I stated before, one of the reasons I let the Supra go was that there were several parts that had they went, I wouldnt have had the fund to repair/ replace. It was fitted with the 'V161' Getrag manual box for example, which costs about £3k for a used one. Really looking to establish what the biggest potential cost would be should the worst happen...

hi i have an auto use it as daily driver with no problems, gearbox is fine not sluggish, all depends what you want to do with it mods etc if planning power upgrades auto box can be limiting factor but ask andy w at sp autos he is the man that knows anyway welcome.

I drive an auto R33 GTS-T. It pulls well for an auto. Even drifted it a little. And they are cheaper.
Thinking of selling it and replacing with GTR instead though.
