Need advice on a run around??

Things are looking good on the house finding and we have made an offer on a 2 bed semi. With a massive drive (not much back garden tho)

Anyway, At the mo between, me and my girlfriend Hayley, we have an RX7 FD
and a R33 GTR (the rx7 is hers and worse on fuel than the skyline).

We need a car to get her to work, (grr Ill have to ride as, if we get it ill only be a mile from work)

We can afford to keep the cars but not really to run hers every day as she does a 45 mile round trip per day, plus it cant do it much good being stuck in rush hour traffic.

We were going to go for something like a golf tdi but this may be out of our price range.

We need something cheap, respectable and good on fuel and I d thought id get some ideas on here as I expect a fair few of you dont use your skylines everyday.

For around a grand, you can pick up a '96 Fiesta 1.25 with the Yamaha designed engine. Thrash it and it will reach 120mph and still return 40+ mpg

was thinking of a 306 maybe but ive had a pug diesel before.
