Still looking to buy a skyline. Need a bit more info

    More of an opinion really.

Well, it looks like through much begging and pleading I've convinced my wife (yeah, we're married now) to let me buy a Skyline

The budget looks like it will stretch to either an R33 GT-R (95-96) or an R34 GTT (99-00)

Both of which would be fresh imports. She's currently leaning towards the R34 because it will be a younger car. I'm more inclined towards the GT-R.

Would you people with experience of owning Skkylines be able to tell me which one would be better value for money, and the advantages of buying either car?

Once again, I appreciate your help.

    Thank you

Without a doubt the GTR is going to be more expensive to run.

How many miles per week will you be using the car for and will you be planning on doing any modifications or keeping a standard car?

Well I for one would get the GTT, I have one and love it. The reason I didnt get a GTR is down to the running costs as I use my car most days for work, so it wasnt cost effective for me. But as Aha says it depends how often you plan on using it.

Now, if my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour, you're gonna see some serious s***

If your end goal is a powerfull competant car, then the R33GTR is far easier and cheaper to tune for good power. If you want a more modern looking car and are not worried about increasing the power, then go for the R34GTT.

More than a few of us have been in the same situation, R33GTR or R34GTT. I went with the R34GTT, sometimes I have regretted it and sometimes not. You really need to drive both cars and get a feel for them.

Personally I love the excitememt putting 500bhp through the rear wheels of my GTT

i would say gtt simply because it is rwd, and also cheaper to run! but depends on what u want to do with it. it may be worth while spending the money that u save by getting a gtt than a gtr in customising the car the way u want it

I'd have to say the R33 GTR as I prefer the looks and think it's a better all round package, especially if you can get a well sorted V-spec in midnight purple

The R34 GTT is much more practical to run as a daily driver and great fun. Don't be put off by the GTR being 4WD as that's easily sorted electronically if you want the RWD only option.

At the moment there is no doubt in my mind that the best value by far is to get a lovingly looked after UK example from the main Skyline boards (you could try the well known Skyline tuners too). Importing is OK, but can work out to be more expensive as frequently quite few changes and upgrades have to be made once in the UK. The standard of work in the UK is very high if it has been performed by any of the respected UK tuners. If you do go for a car that is already here, avoid autotrader and the like and take a really knowledgeable person with you. A tuner will usually do this for a small fee.

    Good luck in your search

I had both GTT and then a 33GTR and it really boiled down to what you want from the car overall as others have said. I loved the GTT as it was a capable daily driver that had some "go" in it when you fancied a blat. The GTR however is a beast that will let you know it everytime you get in. For a start the seats are not as comfortable as the GTT and the interior is a lot more dated (it is an older design afterall).

The GTR cost more to run but gave me the biggest smile, the GTT was a dependable old workhorse that you could also have fun in.

Tough choice but drive both and make whatever your choice your gut says to make.

    Hmmm...
If you could send me a PM with some details, maybe a link to some photos I'll have a look.

How many miles per week will you be using the car for and will you be planning on doing any modifications or keeping a standard car?
The car will do 200-300 a week. I'll most likely be keeping it standard at first (I'll have no money) and looking to tune it up to about 350bhp.

The R34 GTT is much more practical to run as a daily driver and great fun. Don't be put off by the GTR being 4WD as that's easily sorted electronically if you want the RWD only option.
    I drive a GT-Four, 4wd is not a problem.

The GTR cost more to run but gave me the biggest smile, the GTT was a dependable old workhorse that you could also have fun in.
When you say cost more to run. Do you mean fuel costs and servicing? Was the GTT a more reliable car?

    Thanks for you replies guys

I'll be test driving both next back holiday weekend if all goes well

Hi Ned - I'm thinking of selling my car but not definite at the moment. If after your test drive you are in the market for a GTT let me know and I'll send you some details.
